Top Home Security Tips: Prevention is the Key

We all make mistakes, so here are a few simple home security tips to remember that may help you prevent a break-in.

The first step towards protecting your home from burglary is to decrease the chances that you will be a victim of a home invasion or property crime. Unfortunately, your house can serve as an easy target without you even realizing it.

Fortunately, there are additional actions that can be taken to make your home less attractive to a burglar. By taking these fairly easy extra precautions, you may be able to keep your home protected and your mind at ease knowing that your belongings, loved ones, and home are protected.

Follow each link of the home security tips below for additional information:
  • Vacant homes are a much easier target than occupied ones. Do not make it outwardly apparent to everyone that you are not at home.
  • Predictability can help a criminal guess when you will or won’t be at home. Change things up. Mix up your schedule and daily routines on a regular basis.
  • Easy entry for you can be easy entry for a criminal. Make sure that you don’t help potential burglars by doing the hard part of their job for them.
  • No outdoor lighting can save you on energy bills, but it can make your home a very attractive target. Keep your home and yard lit at night.
  • Valuable items in view are like a display window at a store to a would-be thief. If you have valuables and would like to keep them, don’t make them visible to those outside.
Additional tips for helping to keep your house secure from intrusion.
  • Do not give your name on your outgoing answering machine or voicemail message and never provide any information that indicates you are not home.
  • Thoroughly shred all important documents containing personal information, including receipts, bills, statements, credit cards, and any other document which provides a date for when you will not be home.
  • Never leave doors or windows unlocked even when you are leaving the house unattended for only a short period.
  • Have you recently made a big ticket purchase? Be sure to dispose properly of the packaging. By leaving that big box your new flat screen came in, on the street for trash pickup, you are letting the whole world know about your purchase as well.

A 5-Minute Gratitude Practice: Focus on the Good by Tapping into Your Senses

Waking up this morning, I glanced at my cell phone and noticed the weather app ominously predicting many days of snow and icy temperatures ahead. Brrr! I could feel the chill of dark thoughts starting to gather. I could feel my body creak with cold and aging. Life’s challenges were seemingly everywhere. And yet…I was smiling. I was cheerful. I was grateful. What? Was I crazy? As one of my New Year’s resolutions, I’d made a point of tuning my awareness toward appreciation of life’s small delights. I was curious about what I would discover if I focused intentionally on the things that I appreciated. This morning, as I let wakefulness peel the dark back, I could smell my neighbor’s coffee brewing. The snow outside gently buffered the sounds of the world. I could sense my husband’s warm weight in the bed. I took a long moment to enjoy the muted winter light edging in around the slats of the window blinds. There was nothing particularly special going on, but I noticed...

What is mindfulness?

E ver heard someone say “You are here, but you’re just not here”? Pretty confusing eh, but there’s a lot of truth in it. People tend to dwell so much on the past or worry so bad about the future to such extent that they lose the opportunity to live and savor the present. By making a fuss about what cannot be changed and those that are yet to come the “now” becomes nothing but a frustration and obsession to gain control over yesterday and tomorrow. Mindfulness has a lot to do with living in the present. It enables one to live at peace with what was was and what will be and simply enjoy the current moment.   Mindfulness is a concept incorporated in both Eastern and Western cultures. It came from the Indian word “sati” which means awareness, attention and remembering. These three are completely different yet highly associated with one another. Awareness enables you to be conscious about what’s happening. Attention, on the other hand, is a more centralized version of...
